Width x Height @ Lux Quaubas

Width x Height is the title to the art exhibition of Northern Cali artist Jared Powell and Bay area artist Ricky Watts at Lux Quaubas Modern Art Gallery in Old Sacramento.

Jared Powell is a mixed media artist mainly focusing on water color in his paintings, his style possesses many influences from abstract, cubism, graffiti, and figurative. This is the first time I have seen Powell's art and the thing I enjoy most out if his pieces is the experimentation of texture within the canvas. The paint (I think it's paint) is layered on thick and manipulated to create form and I found that very exciting.

Ricky Watts is an illustrator and graffiti artist whose artwork almost can be defined as two different people working. His illustrations are highly detailed and very figurative focusing the human, monsters, and citiscapes. His graffiti work on the other hand possesses a very different body, his spray can work focuses on vibrant color transitions and liquid effect that is Ricky Watts signature.I have personally seen Ricky Watts live painting exhibition last October at a San Francisco art event called ArtBeats and I was highly impressed in his skills to transition color hues and lights and shadow with spray cans.

Some of my favorite pieces from the gallery is the spray painted skateboard set by Ricky Watts because it's a very small canvas in comparison to what I've seen him work on in the past and yet he still is able to add the same detail and technique despite the size difference. I also enjoyed the compilation painting of both artists to create one new unique one. Even the two artists have distinct styles they were still able to create a cohesive piece and I wonder what was their process in creating it, did they paint at the same time? Did they take turns? And if so, how long?

Lux Quaubas Modern Art Gallery is located at 106 K St #34 and the Width x Height exhibit runs from April 17 - May 25.
