Derek Larson: New Media Candidate

On April 1, 2015 I attended the lecture from New Media Art applicant Derek Larson at CSU, Sacramento. Derek Larson's skills resides in painting, digital media, and projection animation. Due to the nature and time limit of the lecture, this blog will be written in note form highlighting projects and concepts.

  • Animation reacting to heat registration at Yale University.
  • Tantric Wealth (2012) - Video  sculptures and animated projections.
  • Fluency Trance (2014) - Video  sculptures and animated projections.
  • Shop til You Drop (2014)
  • Genetically Modified (2014) - Influenced by Henri LeFebure, The Production in Space
  • Animation Puppet - Green screen, motion tracking
  • Droopy Columns (2012)
  • "Cheers" -  Old media injected with new media "Fake Spaces" dimensions
  • Virtual Space - Online gallery "Big Red and Shiny" website, to fix issues with lighting, built paintings that light themselves.
  • Influenced by Micheal Hardt "Common Wealth"
  • Eye tracking research
  • Animation and green screen, After Effects, Premiere Pro, 2D Animation
  • Brought in guest lecturer Eric Adolfsen from Cartoon Network

Current projects

  • 2 Channel projections - big play in space
  • Connection of eye tracking to change outcomes of paintings
Derek Larson seems to be a good candidate for the new media, he possesses an understanding of both traditional and new media techniques and materials which I feel is beneficial because he can relate to a large student census. He also has teaching experience at a university level which is another plus, so I would expect a fairly fast and natural transition if he does obtain the instructor position. I also found his projects very interesting and I can see students sharing the same vision and being able to create similar art projects.
